Head Coach - Waltham
Erika began CrossFit in 2009, started coaching at CrossFit Fenway in 2011, coached at Reebok CrossFit ONE from 2013 – 2015, and has been with ONE Nation since 2015. She graduated from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008 with a major in Communications and a minor in Psychology. Before CrossFit, she was very much a part of team sports including soccer, basketball, and softball. In her college career, she participated in Division II Crew and Division I Women’s Rugby.
CrossFit has provided her a new way of life. It has provided her with the tools to help advance other people’s mental and physical capabilities beyond what they expect of themselves. Since CrossFit has done that for her as an athlete and person, she is looking forward to the opportunity to do the same for others.
Describe the your first CF workout: Coach told me if I could do a thruster at 65# to use the weight. So Fran @ 65# and a green band it is! 7:38 seconds later after bouncing up and down on the rig and slowly melting after 5 or 6 thrusters at a time – I never looked back. “Nothing has ever felt like that before.”
How long have you been coaching? I’ve been coaching since June, 2011.
Favorite type of WOD to coach: Grace, Isabel, Diane – benchmarks where you have to hold on to the bar
Have you competed in CrossFit and what kind? Do you want to? Yes – CF Games 11′, Regionals 11′-14′ – maybe!
Why do you coach? – I love watching movement and solving a fault like it’s a visual equation. How do I help fix that? Did it get better? Incredibly cool when it does and even when it doesn’t. What can I do to relay this better and help change this person’s movement? I coach to show people their own possible. What seems to be unachievable, scary, and pointless to try is something you have control over defeating. The carry over in accomplishing something that was “impossible” will inevitably make you a better human being outside of the gym walls. It is proof to yourself that you can’t argue with.
Favorite part of CrossFit ONE Nation: My favorite part of CrossFit ONE Nation is the community bond and respect the members show each other every time they come in. I feel like as you get older, you just want to be a part of something. Our members do a very good job of allowing that to happen for people of all different abilities, backgrounds, and personalities. The people who walk through the doors create a safe space for each other and anyone wanting to respectfully be a part of that through high fives, introductions, or welcome backs – and I love seeing it daily.
Favorite Food: Sandwich – turkey, ham, goat cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, pickles, challah bread – NAILED IT
Favorite Vacation Spot: Australia (whatuplachlan?!)
Favorite Sport to Watch // Play: Play – Soccer Goalie — Watch: Hockey
Favorite Cheat Food: Fried Chicken and PIzza – I can’t choose.
Favorite Adult Beverage: Anything with Baileys or Kahlua or dessert in a cup with kind of some alchohol
Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner and why? Breakfast because I can make a sandwich with anything in it.
Horror, Action, Comedy, RomCom? RomCom feelz
Dogs or Cats? DOGS! LOUIE!
Life Pet Peeve(s): 1. When people stand on top of you in any check out line expecting it to go faster. 2. When people respond “uh huh, yup, mmhmm” in the middle of you saying words. You aren’t listening!! 3. When people are rude to waiters and waitresses.
3 Hobbies outside of CrossFit: Hiking adventures with Louie, learning how to cook, finding a new activity to try (dance class, rock climbing)
3 Things on your Life Bucket List: Go back to Australia – Compete in a legit Weightlifting Competition – Have some kind of business with a family member.
Embarrassing Childhood Memory: I ran in to a tree chasing a boy’s kickball in the air to impress him. I had to go to the nurse and went home with a skinned knee and scar on my gum. He wasn’t even looking.
Favorite Childhood Memory: Playing wiffle ball or basketball outside in the summer with my family/friends for hours.
